National Overseas Scholarship: Key Highlights

The objective of the Scholarship

The National Overseas Scholarship aims to facilitate low-income students from Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, and Traditional Artisans to pursue higher education abroad, such as Master's or Ph.D. programs, thereby improving their economic and social standing.

National Overseas Scholarship: Eligibility Criteria 

Prior to submitting a scholarship application, eligibility is a crucial factor to take into consideration. The National Overseas Scholarship eligibility requirements are as follows:

For Master’s Degree: 

The minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Bachelor’s Degree. The ideal candidate should have two years of relevant work experience, and candidates with experience will be given preference.

For Ph.D.:

The minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Master’s Degree. 2 years experience - Teaching / Research / Professional / M.Phil degree in the relevant field is desirable as preference will be given to candidates with experience.

For Post-Doctoral:

The minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Master’s Degree and Ph.D. 5 Years of experience – Research /Teaching /Professional in the relevant field is desirable as preference will be given to candidates with experience.

Points that must be taken into consideration before applying for the Scholarship:

  • Bachelor's degree programs are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • Applicants who have already settled or are studying in abroad are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • The age limit is 35 years.
  • Only two children from the same family can benefit from this scholarship. Students are required to submit self-certification in this regard.
  • A scholarship recipient cannot be taken into consideration for a scholarship award a second time.
  • The total family income should not be more than Rs. 8,00,000.
  • In addition to these requirements, it's crucial for applicants to meet the minimum standards for scores on exams like the IELTS, PTE, GMAT, GRE, etc. Also, keep in mind that each university has its own minimum ELP and other test score standards.

National Overseas Scholarship: Application Process

Students applying for the scholarship for the first time must "register" on the national overseas portal.

Complete the student registration form. After successful login, a text is sent to the registered email address.

Log in again and enter your award number and password to check the status. The status of your application under "Check your status" shows as "Pending" or "Submitted".

A candidate is required to notify the Ministry once they have received confirmation of their admission to a foreign educational institution and the appropriate visa. The Ministry will issue the concerned candidate the confirmed award letter after verifying the admission letter, visa, and other necessary documents. This letter will include information about the course, educational institution, and other pertinent information. 

National Overseas Scholarship: Selection Process

The National Overseas Scholarship Selection Committee evaluates each application fairly. Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements are chosen to receive the scholarship

The National Overseas Scholarship Committee focuses on the following factors:

Applications must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered.

Those who have already been admitted to a university in the UK, Germany, Canada, etc. will receive preference.

Students who have not yet been admitted to a foreign university will also be considered under conditions.

Applicants should keep in mind that there will be NO additional interviews or group discussions.

Number of Slots for the Scholarship:

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will allocate 100 slots for scholarships to eligible students and the distribution of these slots is given below on the basis of three categories:  

  • Scheduled tribes: 90
  • Nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes: 6
  • Landless agricultural laborers and traditional artisans: 4
