Cost of studying in Switzerland

Switzerland is an expensive place to live and survive. Because the Swiss are well paid, they spend well. Even though some may argue that smaller towns (such as Bern, Basel) are more affordable than large urban areas (such as Zurich, Lausanne, Geneva). Overall living costs remain high.

Tuition Fees

In Switzerland, the cost of pursuing a Master's degree varies from course to course and from university to university. A master's degree in Switzerland can cost anywhere from 3,000 CHF to 13,000 CHF at some affordable universities. Again, it depends on the course and university you choose and the duration of the course.

Cost of Living

A typical monthly cost (accommodation, food, stationery, entertainment, miscellaneous) is around 12,000 CHF to 16,000 CHF.

Scholarships for MBBS in Switzerland

Here are some of the scholarship options for students who want to study in Switzerland.

ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarships

This scholarship provides financial assistance to Master's students.

Scholarships from ETH Zurich are always intended to provide subsidiary funding. In other words, they are designed to supplement other financial resources, and in particular other scholarships from the student’s canton (a subdivision of a country) of residence or country of origin. ETH Zurich scholarships do not completely cover the costs of studies and living.

Graduate Institute Geneva Scholarships

In this scheme, students may get full scholarships of CHF 10,000 (INR 8 lakh) per month or a full scholarship of CHF 20,000 (INR 16 lakh). Merit scholarships are given on the basis of academic performance.

Obtaining Medical License

You must obtain a medical license after completing your Master's degree.

Getting a medical license in the country can be accomplished in three ways :

• After graduating from a Swiss medical school, you are eligible for a residency and must pass the final medical exam to become licensed.

• Alternatively, you can apply for a three-year residency in Switzerland, which requires passing both parts of the national medical exam.

• Finally, you can work for two more years as a resident, so a total of five years, after which you can get a medical license by passing only the written portion of the national medical exam.

You become a Swiss doctor after completing any of the steps. You can then register with the local Cantonal Medical Office.

Residency

As a first step to becoming a medical doctor in Switzerland, foreign graduates i.e outside EEA (European Economic Area) must pass the Swiss federal medical exam. You apply for residency as you would for any job, with no special requirements or grades.

Getting a Visa

To be allowed to stay in the country for longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a Swiss National Visa.

You should make an appointment with the Swiss embassy or consulate in your area as soon as you receive the acceptance letter from your university. Set up an appointment with them six months before you start studying, as these procedures take time. In the case of short-stay visas, the processing time takes between 10-15 days, while in the case of long-stay visas, it takes eight to ten weeks.

You must submit your documents in English, French, or German. You will need a certified translation of those documents if they are not in that language.
